An examined life is worth living, said Socrates. Today several issues - such as cloning, human rights, ecology, globalization, national identity, intercultural dialogue etc - are discussed in the media by economists, sociologists, journalists, legal experts and others. But the perspective of the philosopher is by and large missing. Is it because the philosophers are busy teaching traditional concepts in the class rooms unaware of their role in the day-to-day life situation? Or is it because they have not learned to philosophise themselves, while repeating traditional answers to the contemporary problems? Hence a workshop is planned to provide an opportunity for the interested few to reflect on such questions interculturally

Its in our stars! How does the time and location of our birth influence our life? What did our ‘ancients’ learn from their observation of the constellations? Astrology as a subject is dismissed by skeptics while others swear by their stars.

Is Astrology a science? Then what do we need to know to understand better the effect of stars on man’s life? Is it possible to predict what the stars foretell?

This Hayagriva course attempts to enlighten us on an intriguing subject through a systematic study of the relation between astronomy and geography; birth charts; constellations and zodiacal systems; the 9 planets and 12 signs and their interaction; methods of prediction etc

July 16th - We begin with an account of the Bhakthi movement-its origins in Tamil Nadu, the cultural conditions that favoured its rise, the resources that the religions of India offered and the interrogation on the part of the Bhakthi movement of both the ‘great’ and ‘little’ traditions. The writings of the Virasaiva saints are used to illustrate these issues

July 17th - The experience of the woman saint is seen as radically different. While the male saint is on the whole comfortable in marriage, the woman saint is in a state of discomfort and her experience offers a challenge to the conventional pieties

The poetry of Andal. Nachiar Thriumozhi. Saguna Bhakthi; the intimacy gained when God has a form, colour, clothing, relatives, appurtenances, weapons, exploits, history and personality. Time and space in Nachiar Thirumozhi. The economies of bridal mysticism

July 18th - Kabir . Nirguna Bhakthi. This is a poetry that does not explore the poet’s relationship with god unlike say Mira, it instead mounts an attack on the reader and it constitutes a radical interrogation of both Hinduism and Islam. The interiority, intimacy and violence of Kabir.

July 19th - Introduction to Sufism. Its relationship to orthodox Islam. The subtlety of its interpretation of the Five Pillars of Islam. The four stages of the soul’s ascent to God. Some Sufi saints and the dangers of heterodoxy. The use of joke and anecdote. Poetry and philosophy.

July 20th - Rumi. A brief account of his life and the importance of the Friend. The mystic implication of the dance. Detailed analysis of some of his poems. An exploration of connections between the Bhakthi and Sufi movements

July 21st - Readings from poetry accompanied by singing by renowned artists (venue will be announced)

Dr.Sharada Bhanu

The Indian concept of time, creation and calendar

Course Fee: Rs.800/- payable by cash or cheque in favour of Hayagriva Study Circle

Day 1. Monday,March 12, Time: 4pm-6.00pm Topic-KAALA- the Indian Concept of TIME
The concept of Time is unique to India. While the West could think of time from an antiquity 6000 years to 6 Million years, that too only in the last couple of hundred years, India has had a concept of thousands of Yuga and Kalpa running into crores and crores of years. The Time span associated with each of the above terminologies is huge, mind boggling and hence seem confounding. In this capsule an effort is made to understand them not just as abstract figures of enormous time span but as astronomical events and their measure which these terminologies and their time span actually denote.

Day 2. Tuesday, 13 March , Time: 4pm to 6.30 pm Topic: CREATION
This subject capsule brings clearly to our understanding that the questioning and awareness of how the creation took place is not a new phenomenon in modern science. The Indian Rishi scientists have repeatedly asked this question and looked for credible answers over 5000 years ago . These questions and answers as found in the Indian texts can now be confidently looked at today, understood in modern scientific parlance and more importantly used in the latest scientific research to understand how creation took place.

Day 3. Wednesday, 14 March, Time 4pm to 6pm Topic: CALENDAR
This talk examines the Indian Calendar system and questions the scientific nature of the Calendar which is currently followed the world over

D.K.Hari, Conceptuliser of BHARATH GYAN
